Children learn empathy and compassion from a variety of sources, but their parents are the most significant influence in this development. From the very beginning, parents act as the primary role models, guiding their children in understanding and connecting with the emotions of others. The way parents communicate, respond, and display kindness shapes how children perceive and engage with the feelings of those around them. Through this early exposure to compassionate behavior and emotional awareness, parents instill lasting values of empathy that children carry with them into their interactions and relationships throughout their lives.
At Cmtyhelp, our mission is to cultivate emotional intelligence, equip the next generation with vital soft skills, and create a strong sense of belonging among young people through meaningful community service. In January 2025, I had the privilege of visiting my cousin and her family in Bangalore, often referred to as the Silicon Valley of India.

Kevin, a 5th grader at National Public School in Bangalore, is also the Karnataka State Kalaripayattu Champion for 2024-2025. As his uncle, I am incredibly proud of his outstanding achievement. Kalaripayattu is an ancient martial art from Kerala, India, with origins over 3,000 years old. The name derives from “Kalari” (battlefield) and “Payattu” (fight or practice). It is a dynamic discipline combining physical training, self-defense, weaponry, and healing techniques, including strikes, kicks, joint locks, acrobatics, and the use of traditional weapons like swords and spears. Beyond physical skills, Kalaripayattu emphasizes mental discipline, self-awareness, and inner strength, making it a holistic practice that integrates body, mind, and spirit. It is also practiced for fitness, flexibility, and self-defense.

What made me even prouder were the countless stories his parents shared about Kevin’s natural inclination to help others and his consistent willingness to lend a hand. One story, in particular, left a lasting impression on me.When a tree fell near the apartment complex where Kevin and his family live, Kevin took it upon himself to help the community by voluntarily cutting and clearing the branches. The feedback from Padurang Uncle highlighted just how much he appreciated Kevin’s efforts. Don’t you agree this is a moment his parents must feel incredibly proud of?

Another moment that truly highlighted Kevin’s caring and thoughtful nature occurred during my visit. Over the two days I spent at Kevin’s house, I would exercise by doing pull-ups on his pull-up bar. Kevin noticed and complimented me on how well I could do pull-ups, which made me feel good. On the day I was leaving, he surprised me with an extra pull-up bar he had received as a gift. I was genuinely taken aback by his kindness. I made sure to bring it back with me to New Jersey, where I installed it at my home. Thank you, Kevin, for this thoughtful gift—I truly appreciate it. We need more people like you, Kevin George, in this world!
