Paula Amore discusses her son Nicholas’s volunteering journey with Cmtyhelp

Cmtyhelp honored Nicholas Amore with the Bronze President’s Volunteer Service Award for his outstanding commitment to community service. As an active youth member of the Church of St. Clare in Staten Island, Nicholas dedicated over 50 hours to volunteering in 2024. He is also a student at Myra S. Barnes Intermediate School 24. The award ceremony was attended by Nicholas’s parents and grandparents. It was a privilege to interview Paula Amore, Nicholas’s mother, who shared valuable insights on how volunteering has had a profound impact on her son’s life.

1) How did you feel when you learned Nicholas had earned the PVSA certificate, and what values do you hope he gained through his volunteering experience?

As Nicholas’ parents, we were incredibly proud when we learned that he had earned the PVSA certificate. We hope that through his volunteering experiences, he has developed a deep sense of compassion for others and a strong desire to contribute and make a positive difference.

2)What advice would you give other parents?

I believe parents should lead by example, showing their children the value of giving back, even when they’re reluctant to volunteer. Encouraging small steps and highlighting the positive impact of their actions can help children see the importance of volunteering.

3)Are there any specific moments or stories that stand out to you as examples on how volunteering has positively influenced Nicholas?

After volunteering at St. Clare’s Food Pantry, Nicholas told me that he didn’t realize how many people needed food. He mentioned feeling grateful to have been part of organizing the food and gained a deeper understanding of how vital the pantry is to the community.

4)How do you think volunteering impacts a family as a whole?

Volunteering positively shapes how a family relates to others and to each other, promoting empathy, understanding, and stronger cooperation within the family.

5) One value you always taught your kid

The most important value I’ve taught my son is compassion for others. I believe that giving back to those in need, even without expecting anything in return, is a valuable lesson for our youth to learn and carry with them throughout life.

6) One thing your child has taught you through volunteering

As a parent, my son Nicholas has shown me that pushing children to step outside their comfort zones and help others is key to developing a kind heart and a strong character.
